New Entrants

“Mum, why didn’t Day Care teach me what school was going to be like?”
Olivia G

We welcome our New Entrant and Year 1 students into Te Kete Wakahuia. Our focus is on easing the transition from the Early Childhood Education environment to the school environment. This transition is important because it can affect a student’s whole school experience. We make this a positive and productive experience through our balanced approach to learning, which includes formal learning in the morning and a less formal approach in the afternoon.

The school follows evidence-based learning instruction to ensure effective learning. Students remain in classrooms with the same teachers for most of the day, providing consistency and support. Each day includes one hour each of mathematics, reading, and writing, with frequent movement breaks and opportunities to play.

Afternoons are dedicated to a broad curriculum, including science, social science, the arts, and physical education. Students also take part in school-wide singing sessions and meet with their school houses for different events to encourage a strong sense of community and belonging.
